Hello Classic Genesis Midi fans. This is The Classic Genesis Tribute Collection. My name is Jim Kleban from the US of A and I have been a Genesis fan since the early 70's.... I also think I am a musician of sorts. Anyway, here are some originally created Classic GENESIS midi files. All of these files were created by me. Included, in the archive are (in the order in which they were created): Broadway Melody of 1974 (Oct. 96) The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Oct. 96) The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging (Oct. 96) Trick of the Tail (Nov. 96) Time Table (Nov. 96) The Lamia (Nov. 96) Suppers Ready (Dec. 96) - Internet Collaboration Firth of Fifth (Dec. 96) Hairless Heart (Jan. 97) I Know What I Like (Jan. 97) Anyway (Jan. 97) Horizons (Feb. 97) Cinema Show (Feb. 97) - Internet Collaboration Keep an eye open for more classic GENESIS tunes... I spend a bit of time on these, so I am sure we will get to favorite tune soon. If you have any comments or suggestions on corrections or improvements, please send them to me at the following address: jkleb@microfone.net I look forward to hearing your opinions. If you have any requests, please let me know... remember that I create Classic Genesis tunes so try to keep your wishes within that time period. My MIDI setup ------------- I used a FATAR midi controller (Studio 610), SB AWE32 and Yamaha DB50XG soundcards and Cakewalk Pro Audio. Nothin fancy, pretty simple but I think this equipement sounds pretty good for PC toys. I recently acquired a ROLAND Midi Guitar pickup and interface and have started to learn how to use it. This thing is pretty good, but not perfect. One note, your playing has to be balls on perfect and consistent to even make it somewhat useful. All of the MIDI files follow the GMIDI spec and some require the use of 32 voices. If you find some notes are cutting off, try muting any/all tracks that say ECHO or DOUBLE on them. All of the MIDI files in this archive have been mixed using a XG Midi soundcard and sound best when played back on one. These files also sound good on most GMIDI wavetable soundcards in that XG midi is backward compatible with GMIDI. If you find that the parts are way out of balance in this version, please try the AWE32 mixes of these songs which can be found in the archive GENMAST.ZIP! Now on to the songs: Broadway Melody of 1974 - From The Lamb Lies Down ------------------------------------------------- This was my first GENESIS midi that I decided to share with the world. I put it together rather quickly and it is basically a simple song.... but I tried to capture the raw energy of this great tune. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Title Cut ------------------------------------------ Now onto something a bit more ambitious. I have always tinkered with the Piano Intro to this song since 1974 and thought, why not MIDI it.... from there, the rest of the song took shape. Mike's split BASS part was tough to recreate in MIDI since one line is DIRECT (Clean) and the other is going thru a distortion device, but I did my best in picking a suitable patch. The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging - from The Lamb Lies Down ---------------------------------------------------------------- This humorous little song was alot of fun sequencing. Phil's percussion work and drumming are amazing. The challenging part of this song was recreating the oddly mixed vocal parts of the original. I needed to take a bit of creative licensing to pull this one off. Trick of the Tail - Title Cut ----------------------------- Well, I am from the school that Phil C. is a better drummer than he is a singer. But this tune is the best of the post Pete era and deserves a place in the Classic Genesis Tribute. Phil overdubbed his vocals so much, that in places his harmonies are classic Beatlesque. Tony's piano part is very melodic and Steve did some great, creative guitar parts. This song was alot of fun to sequence... The melody is so catching, I found myself singing this tune to myself for a couple of weeks after the MIDI was completed. Time Table - From Foxtrot ------------------------- One of my favorite Genesis ballads. Really envokes the feel of medieval England. Steve's guitar work is way ahead of his time, in which, his part is like a keyboard part(synth) but played with a great sound and style that only Genesis could create. The bass lines in this tune are simply stated, marvelous and well constructed. Of the entire song, the bass took the longest to sequence. The Lamia - From The Lamb Lies Down ----------------------------------- This has got to be the most romantic sounding Genesis tune of all time. Odd thing is, that the story line is a bit grotesque. Tony's piano part is, simply stated, one of his best efforts ever. Steve and Phil really get into quite a rockin jam at the end. But the hardest part of sequencing this tune turned out to be Peter's flute at the very end.... quite a tricky little part that was bearly audible as the tune is fading out just as he starts playing. Everytime I listen to this MIDI, I keep expecting to hear "Silent Sorrows in Empty Boats". Maybe someday in the future I will put that one together. SUPPER'S READY - From the Foxtrot Album --------------------------------------- This is the complete work of Supper's Ready. This was created by various Midi musicians from around the world with a love for Classic Genesis music. We used the Internet to send parts back and forth and were very helpful to each other in fine tuning are assignments. The Supper's Ready project team was: Andy Hyam from the UK - Lover's Leap Phil Kett from the UK - * Gauranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man Jim Kleban (me) from the US - Ikhnaton and Itsacon/How Dare I Phil Richards from CAN - Willow Farm Simon Goodwin from CAN - Apocalyspe in 9/8 Steve Halko from the US - As Sure Is Eggs are Eggs * GESM original acoustic guitar/organ parts courtesy of Finn Aasheim of Norway. Firth of Fifth -------------- Ambitious project.... by far the most difficult MIDI project I ever tackled. I have spent hours and hours just re-mixing this thing and got some really good feedback from a lot of GENESIS fans who all helped me get this thing together. Probably the most tricky portion of getting this tune to sound right, was in adjusting the ever changing tempo. Without the tempo changes, this thing sounded SEQUENCED. The intro to this tune has turned out to be quite a popular part for other MIDI files. I bet I got sent over 10 versions to listen to, some real good others not, but when all the dust settled, I guess I liked my version the best. Hairless Heart from The Lamb Lies Down -------------------------------------- Seemingly simple little song... lovely melody but.... the time signatures were so tough I had to count out time to keep track of where I was while I was sequencing this song (Hint, hint). I Know What I Like from Selling England --------------------------------------- Genesis first attempt at a HIT SINGLE??? I dunno, but its the first tune that they wrote that actually has a HOOK! This tune was a challenge to get the lawn mower sequences sounding half decent. Anyway from The Lamb Lies Down ------------------------------ This is one of my favorites from The Lamb. It didn't take long to do, but the synth parts were a bit tricky. I hope your gear can play back portamento data, cause the synths sounds great with that effect on. Horizons from Foxtrot --------------------- This is the first project done with my new MIDI guitar. The feel of this tune would have been very difficult to capture without the MIDI guitar. It was a good tune to get to learn how to play this new contraption and I like it. I also needed to use the NYLON string patch to simulate the HARMONICS of the real thing. Cinema Show/Isle of Plenty from Selling England ----------------------------------------------- The second WWW Midi Internet Project. This great classic tune is probably one of the boys most creative and difficult to perform piece that they have ever written. This, like Supper's Ready had contributors from all around the globe. Phil's drumming in this tune has got to be one of his best efforts ever and was very difficult to perform. And Tony's synth solos are simply brilliant. The CS team included: Andy Hyam from the UK on first acoustic guitar Simon Goodwin from CAN on the Hammond, Mellotron, Flute and Oboe and Drums Steve Halko from the USA on Electric Lead Guitar Paolo Cirelli from Italy on Synth Solo's Erik Habbinga from the USA on Bass Guitar Jim Kleban from the USA on second acoustic guitar, nylon guitar, electric 12 string, jazz guitar and percussion. Produced and engineered by ME with friendly assistance from Simon Goodwin This was the first big project on which I worked with my MIDI guitar... whew, what a learning experience and that's how I came to doin most of the guitar parts to this tune. The hardest part of this midi was to actually hear all the different parts on the original and decipher what instrument was playing what notes. Believe me, no easy task on the mix for this one. Current/New Projects -------------------- Collaboration on The Musical Box Maybe some Mr. Floyd and some retro 80's tunes Contemplating Fly on a Windshield Copyright Stuff --------------- The present copyright situation with midi files is uncertain. Rumour has it that the music industry would like midi files to be classified as a representation of sheet music, which is copyrighted. My belief is that midi files are simply computer data, a sequence, and hopefully just a personal representaion of the real thing and not an exact copy of the music. Midi files could never compete with the real thing and hopefully would encourage the purchase of it. As it stands, I believe that all my midi files held here at Music1 are free to be listened to, but I personally cannot give permission for copies to be made, disseminated or publicly performed. If anyone feels (Peter, Tony, Phil, Steve or Mike) that their copyright is being infringed in any way by my midi files then they should contact me, and I will have this page removed from Music 1. Midi is a hobby and I do it because I enjoy music and performing the musical creations and wish to share them with the world!
